How the Medicare Initial Enrollment Period Works
Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is the first opportunity you have to enroll in Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance). It’s a 7-month window built around the month you turn 65:
3 months before your 65th birthday month
Your birthday month itself
3 months after your 65th birthday month
For example, if you turn 65 on August 15, your IEP runs from May 1 through November 30. This is the ideal time to sign up — enrolling during your IEP means your coverage starts as early as possible with no penalties.
Here’s a big heads-up for Medicare beneficiaries born on the first of the month. You must pay close attention to this calculator. If your 65th birthday falls on the first day of a month, Medicare treats it as though your birthday is the previous month. Without planning, you could accidentally miss your Medicare IEP enrollment window.
